Preserving Tea Heritage Through Meaningful Travel

Peridale was founded on the belief that travel should create lasting connections between people, places, and traditions. We specialize in bringing Malaysia's tea plantation heritage to life through carefully designed experiences.

Our Story

Peridale began in 1998 when founder Mei Lin Wong returned to Malaysia after years of working in international hospitality. During a personal visit to the Cameron Highlands, she noticed that many visitors passed through the region's famous tea estates without truly understanding the cultivation practices, the people behind the tea, or the environmental stewardship required to maintain these highland ecosystems.

She recognized an opportunity to bridge this gap. Rather than simply transporting tourists to viewing points, Peridale would facilitate genuine encounters with tea producers, offer insights into sustainable agriculture, and create space for travelers to appreciate the cultural and natural significance of Malaysia's highland tea regions.

The company started with a single tour to the BOH Tea Estate, partnering directly with estate managers to provide visitors access to production facilities and cultivation areas typically closed to the public. The response was remarkable. Travelers appreciated the depth of information, the respectful approach to local communities, and the opportunity to taste teas directly from the source.

Over the following years, Peridale expanded its offerings to include multi-day highland experiences, collaborations with smaller artisan tea farms, and comprehensive journeys that connect the Cameron Highlands with other Malaysian highland destinations. Each expansion maintained the company's founding principle that authentic education and cultural respect should guide every aspect of tour design.

Today, Peridale works with tea estates of various scales, from the large commercial operations like BOH to family-run artisan farms. We maintain direct relationships with estate managers, tea sommeliers, nature guides, and highland accommodation providers. This network allows us to offer experiences that are both professionally organized and deeply rooted in local knowledge.

Our approach to tourism emphasizes environmental awareness, support for local economies, and the preservation of tea cultivation traditions. We believe that thoughtful travel can contribute to the sustainability of the places we visit, and we design our tours to reflect that commitment.

Our Approach to Highland Tourism

Estate Partnerships

We maintain direct working relationships with tea estates and farms throughout the highlands. These partnerships provide our guests with access to production areas, processing facilities, and expert knowledge not typically available to casual visitors.

Environmental Awareness

Highland ecosystems require careful stewardship. Our tours emphasize sustainable cultivation practices, watershed protection, and the role of tea estates in maintaining montane forest corridors. We educate guests about conservation efforts in the regions we visit.

Small Group Experiences

We limit group sizes to ensure quality interactions with guides, estate personnel, and local communities. Smaller groups allow for more detailed explanations, personalized attention, and reduced environmental impact on the sites we visit.

Expert Guides

Our guides possess extensive knowledge of tea cultivation, highland ecology, and regional history. Many have backgrounds in agriculture, environmental science, or cultural heritage. They facilitate learning experiences rather than simply narrating prepared scripts.

Safety Standards

All tours follow comprehensive safety protocols for highland travel, including weather monitoring, first aid preparedness, and communication systems. Our vehicles are maintained to high standards, and guides are trained in emergency response procedures.

Cultural Respect

We approach highland communities with respect for their traditions, livelihoods, and daily rhythms. Our tours support local economies through partnerships with highland accommodations, restaurants, and small businesses while honoring the privacy of residential areas.

Our Values

Peridale operates from a foundation of respect for people, places, and traditions. We recognize that tea estates are working agricultural operations, that highland communities have established ways of life, and that natural environments require thoughtful stewardship. Our role is to facilitate connections between travelers and these realities in ways that benefit all parties.

We value authenticity over spectacle. Rather than staging performances or creating artificial experiences, we provide access to genuine agricultural operations, introduce travelers to people actively involved in tea production, and present the highlands as they are rather than as romanticized fantasies.

Education guides everything we do. We believe that informed travelers make better decisions, appreciate experiences more deeply, and become advocates for the places and traditions they encounter. Our tours prioritize learning opportunities, whether about tea processing techniques, highland ecology, or the economic realities of small-scale farming.

Sustainability is not a marketing term for us but a practical commitment. We work to minimize environmental impact, support local employment, maintain fair partnerships with service providers, and contribute to the long-term viability of highland tourism through responsible practices.

Finally, we value the ongoing relationships we build with both our guests and our highland partners. Many travelers return for different experiences, and our estate partnerships deepen over years of collaboration. These sustained connections are the foundation of our work.
